If you sign up for time on the confocal system and then do not use it, you will be held responsible (i.e.
billed) if the system ends up being left on for an extended period of time because another user
anticipated that you would be coming on within 2 hours of her/his departure. If your plans change, be
sure to update the sign-up sheet!
21. (Sign-up sheet on door does not indicate another user coming on within 2 hr.)
a. Turn off lasers:
If Argon laser is on, first put it in Standby as described in step 20a. Then, in the same window,
reduce Output (%) slider to 25 and then click Off.
If one or both He/Ne lasers are on, highlight the appropriate laser and click Off button (see step
10, screenshot on right).
From the time the lasers are turned off you will need to wait at least 5 minutes before turning off the
entire system, so note the time.
b. Exit software as described in step 20b.
c. Click Exit button on Switchboard window (see
screenshot accompanying step 8). If you get this
message, click OK.
d. Follow step 20d.
e. Follow step 20e, except select Shut Down from the
options available in the Shut Down Windows dialog
box (it’s OK for the computer to shut down while
waiting 5 minutes for the lasers to cool, just not the entire system).
f. As you wait 5 minutes for the lasers to finish cooling:
Close main valve on compressed nitrogen tank by turning clockwise (see step 1).
Fill out the log book
Fill out the slip of paper that you will leave in front of the Hg lamp power supply for the next
user to read (see step 3).
g. Once the lasers have cooled for at least 5 minutes, turn off both the Components and System/PC
switches (together is fine) (see step 5).
h. Turn off the Hg lamp power supply (see step 4).
i. Put the blue dust cover over the microscope. Try not to disturb the silver cable going into the scope.
Cover all of the scope except for the Hg lamp (you can feel heat coming out of the Hg lamp vent),
unless the Hg lamp was not on during your session.
